The Center for Sustainable Development aims to develop sustainable and integrated solutions, which address many contemporary and significant challenges posed by the rapid economic and demographic changes of the State of Qatar. Our holistic vision for interdisciplinary and innovative research enables us to identify the key priorities by working together with relevant stakeholders. This way, our research is based on a demand-driven approach and oriented towards tailor-made solutions that are economically feasible, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life in the State of Qatar and the broader region. Currently, our emphasis is on research programs related to Biotechnology, Food-Energy-Water-Waste Sustainability and Human Sustainability. We strive to create interdisciplinary research that is aligned with Qatar’s National Research Strategy, the Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as the research agenda of Qatar University. We are committed to innovative and applied research to address the major challenges of sustainable development in Qatar. We aim to enhance local capacity and secure additional external resources, to conduct demand-driven research on sustainable development. One of our main goals is to develop research collaborations and active research groups, while effectively engaging industry, students, and academic peers in our activities. Alongside research, we welcome staff and students in our capacity building activities. We are interested in collaborating with local and international industrial and academic partners to advance the knowledge on sustainable development.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at Qatar University invites students to submit their applications for a Research Assistant position funded by the center to work on the following projects:

Project 1: Pilot scale cultivation of Algae biomass for functional poultry feed production (Dr. Imen Saadaoui)

Project 2: Assessment of the Nutraceutical and pharmaceutical potential of novel microalgae isolated from Qatar extreme environment (Dr. Imen Saadaoui)

Project 3: Bioremediation of produced water from oil and gas industry (Dr. Hareb Al Jabri)

Project 4: Fodder production improvement using alternative agricultural inputs (Dr. Helmi Hamdi)

Project 5: Sustainable and Cost-Effective Production of Microalgae-based Superior Fish Feed in Qatar (Dr. Probir Das)

Main Duties and Responsibilities will be as following:

1. Provide support to their research supervisor(s) who are conducting experiments or gathering and analyzing information and data in the research center.
2. Conduct a literature review from print and online resources to gather information relevant to assigned research activities and publications. He/she might help in manuscripts’ writing and other publications under the close guidance of their research supervisor(s)
3. Help undergraduate and graduate students working in the center in their academic and logistic procedures and requirements pertinent to the center’s research activities.
4. Assist in the organization of research events, meetings, ceremonies, and other relevant activities.
5. Safeguard the confidentiality of the subjects as necessary.
6. Contribute to QU publications outputs.

Qualifications

Applicant should have an admission or is currently enrolled Master student in Environmental Sciences Program at Qatar University:

1. Completed a Bachelor degree in Science, engineering, or related field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80 out of 4.00 from a university or college accredited by an international accrediting association, or by the Ministry of Higher Education or comparable authority in that country.
2. Achieved a minimum score of 6 in IELTS (Academic) or 68 in TOEFL iBT, taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester of admission OR earned a previous degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a Program where English was the language of instruction.
3. 3. A satisfactory performance in the personal interview with the admission committee.
