Recent greenhouse gas emissions are the highest in history and climate changes had widespread impacts on human and natural systems. The 2014 IPCC report mentions that cost effective mitigation options must use an integrated approach to reduce energy use, the GHG intensity of end-use sectors, decarbonize energy supply, reduce net emissions and enhance carbon sinks in land-based sectors. A general world perspective on the status of the carbon capture and sequestration will be presented, followed by a description of the research related to the development of solvents for carbon capture. Research work done in the last two decades at the International Test Centre for Carbon Capture (University of Regina) will be highlighted. Research topics to be discussed will include results dealing with the solubility, kinetics, calorimetry, physicochemical properties, degradation, corrosion, process simulation and pilot plant studies.
